Kahuina is a new residential development coming to Kakaako, near downtown Honolulu. The development consists of two residential structures and a parking structure. The residential structures, named Lamaku and Mamalu, will bring a total of 859 units to the neighborhood at a split of 40% Market Rate units and 60% combined Workplace & Affordable Units. Overall, the development intends to bring around 35,000 Sq Ft of commercial space to the 3.66 acre lot.

Kahuina means “The Crossroads and Intersections” in the native Hawaiian language, named for its central location in the Our Kakaako neighborhood. The development of Kahuina is taking place during Increment II of the Our Kakaako Master Plan. Construction is estimated to begin during 2023 and finish in 2026, with sales expected to start before the end of 2022.
Our Kakaako is a vibrant, bustling neighborhood that became established during Increment I of the neighborhood’s development. The second Increment intends to build on this by continuing the development of pedestrian-friendly spaces with an open-space design that respects the island culture.

Where Is Kahuina Being Developed?
Kahuina is a new residential and workforce housing development being planned in the Kakaako area of Honolulu. Located in the Our Kakaako neighborhood just south of Downtown Honolulu, Kahuina intends to bring over 30,000 feet of commercial space to the community. The development of Kahuina is taking place on a 3.66 acre lot in the middle of the neighborhood, dubbed “Block C.”
The Our Kakaako neighborhood is a vibrant and progressive community that has become well established in Honolulu. It focuses on encouraging the evolution of island culture in a sustainable, pedestrian-friendly neighborhood.
Neighborhood Features Available To Residents Of Kahuina
Kahuina is being developed near the center of the Our Kakaako neighborhood, between Mother Waldron Park to the north and the planned Makai Gateway Park to the south.
For shopping and dining, SALT at Our Kakaako is a shopping center completed during Increment I that comprises an entire city block. With over 85,000 Sq Ft of retail, restaurant, and mixed-use space, SALT presents plentiful opportunities to eat, relax, or gather. It won the 2018 Shopping Center of the Year award.
While Kahuina is within the city, it isn’t far from Hawaii’s golden sands. Ala Moana Beach is just over a mile away from Kahuina’s development site.
About Kahuina - New Residential and Workforce Housing Development
Kahuina is early in the development cycle, but a few key details are known. The development comprises two housing structures and a 9-story parking structure. Approximately 40% of the units will be Market Price and the remainder will be split between workforce and affordable housing.
Lamakū, whose name means “Large Standing Torch”, will be the first residential structure. It will be 43-stories and bring a total of 329 market price units and 120 Workforce housing units to the neighborhood. Lamakū will contain the only market-price units in the Kahuina project.
Māmalu, whose name is meant to honor the legacy of Princess Victoria Kamāmalu, will be the second residential structure. It will be 32-stories tall and bring a total of 125 Affordable Rental Housing Units and 273 Workforce for-sale housing units to the neighborhood.
Kahuina - Services & Amenities
Not much is known about Kahuina’s amenities and services at this time. The project is estimated to bring 35,000 Sq Ft of commercial space to the neighborhood.
