Hawaii Kai, Hawaii | Listings, Lifestyle, & Neighborhood Guides

Hawaii Kai is a largely residential area on the eastern end of Oahu island, located along Maunalua Bay. Real estate in Hawaii Kai ranges from properties with marina access in Portlock to ridge communities like Mariners' Ridge. This area is popular for lovers of boats, jet skiers, and parasailers - but not often swimmers, due to a shallow bottom and reef.

Hawaii Kai is far removed from Honolulu that most residents prefer to own a car, allowing them to commute at their own discretion.

Community Lifestyle

Hawaii Kai, located on the east side of Oahu, Hawaii, offers a unique and attractive lifestyle characterized by its beautiful natural surroundings and a relaxed, island living atmosphere. The area is primarily residential, with a mix of single-family homes, townhouses, and condominiums. The lifestyle of Hawaii Kai is based around the marina, with a rare few neighborhoods holding properties that have boat ramps.

Hawaii Kai has a good selection of shopping centers, restaurants, and cafes. As one example, the Koko Marina Center offers plenty of shopping, dining, and water activities. The area encourages a sense of community by hosting local events, such as farmer's markets. Reflecting the desirability of the location, the cost of living in Hawaii Kai is relatively high even for Hawaii. This includes higher prices for housing, groceries, and utilities.

While public transportation options are available, most residents prefer to have a car so they can travel at their own convenience. Hawaii Kai is a bit of a drive from downtown Honolulu, but it offers a more relaxed pace of life.

Outdoor Recreation

Hawaii Kai is known more for its marinas than its beaches, but the area still has a few gems. Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve is one such example.

For the most part, however, beaches in Hawaii Kai are often smaller and more difficult to reach than other beaches on Oahu. They also tend to have deeper and more dangerous waters, unsuitable for inexperienced swimmers. While there are several good surf spots, they can be dangerous - shallow areas with sharp rocks along the bottom are common.

In terms of family friendly beaches, Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve is near the southern tip of Hawaii Kai, and within a short trip of most neighborhoods. The area was once one of the most popular tourist destinations, but overuse led to the state introducing restrictions and safeguarding its future. It is always closed to the public on Tuesdays and the park isn't free - it has a $25 entry fee and $3 parking lot fee as of January 2024.

If you live on the island or are active duty military and stationed here, entry is free with the appropriate identification - though the parking lot fee still applies. Learn more about Hanauma Bay on their website, here.
